The Wong Family // Black & White Photography // Part One

I’ve been dreaming of a certain type of photo session lately and I had the opportunity to play with it a bit  last weekend. Basically, it is  less posed (although a little comes into play from time to time) and more real life. Documentary. My husband looked at it and said journalistic. Walking into your life and capturing the moments as they happen. Does that make sense? I’m still figuring it out myself. I think all of these words work, but are not quite how I would like to label it. Or maybe I should just do it instead of figuring it out.. let it happen as it does.

When I met Michelle and saw her house, I asked if we could take some time in our session before we “began” to capture some of their morning routine. She had already told me that she was drawn to my work because of the “in between” moments that are captured. She went on to tell me that she herself was an artist and that she wasn’t afraid to go the less traditional route for her photos. I knew her family would be great to play a bit. I went on to ask her what was typical for them to do in the morning and she quickly replied hanging out in their kitchen. It was the room that she fell in love with when they first bought the house and it became the space that they spent most of their time together. The girls quickly plopped down at the table to color as Mom and Dad drank their morning coffee. Michelle’s mother was even there to join in.

I decided to edit this group of their photos in black and white once I found out how much Michelle loved black and white photography. I mean, she had amazing photography all over her home. Loved it. And I love how these turned out. This part of our shoot wasn’t very long at all, but it definitely wet my appetite for a longer shoot just like it. Don’t get me wrong, I love my regular shoots too, but I’m still dreaming of a long shoot just like it. So if you are interested, let me know. I’d love to be a fly on your wall!

I’ll also be posting the rest of their shoot soon. I just wanted to highlight this part of it on its own. I hope you all like it!
